Winter Palettes, clockwise from lower left: Folio, Demi and Pocket, all by Art Toolkit.

I’ve had several people ask what colors are in my Art Toolkit palettes so I thought I’d do a post with a winter update. I like to switch up the colors seasonally.

All colors are by Daniel Smith except for those marked with a WN for Winsor & Newton or an H for Holbein.

Folio Palette

Note: I intentionally filled the pans of this palette partway so that I could play with big brushes — I’ll post more about the brushes at a later date. I’ve been having so much fun with them! Filling the pans like this allows room to work the color right in the pans. I also mix the colors right on the brush for cool effects.

  • Top row: Hansa yellow light, cadmium yellow pale, quinacridone gold, raw sienna, transparent red oxide
  • Second row: phthalo blue green shade, cobalt turquoise light (WN), cerulean blue (WN), cobalt blue, ultramarine blue
  • Third row: quinacridone rose, organic vermillion, Venetian red, indanthrone blue, neutral tint

Quinacridone gold and Venetian red are new colors on my palette. I’ve really been loving the greens you can get with the gold! And I’ve been loving the opacity of Venetian red, especially mixed with ultramarine blue and indanthrone blue.

Demi Palette

I put this little palette together for a December trip to Arizona for my birthday — it has some special colors in it as you’ll see below! It’s just for fun, I keep it in my daypack along with the Pocket palette.

Daniel Smith Sedona genuine was a perfect match for these red rocks in Tucson, Arizona!
  • Top row: Hansa yellow light, shell pink (Holbein), smalt (WN), carbazole violet
  • Second row: These are all made from Arizona pigments — so cool to paint with them while in Arizona! Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Genuine, Kingman turquoise genuine, Yavapai genuine, Sedona genuine

Huge thank you to my friend Sandy Allnock for those two turquoises — she filled the pans for me and made my Arizona palette dreams come true.

Pocket Palette

This is my workhorse palette and it goes everywhere with me.

Sketching walnuts and acorns in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on December 23rd.

From top to bottom and left to right: cadmium yellow pale (WN), quinacridone gold, raw sienna, quinacridone rose, permanent alizarin crimson, transparent orange (Schminke), cadmium red, cobalt turquoise light (WN), phthalo blue green shade, cobalt blue, indanthrone blue, perylene green, transparent red oxide

Let me know if you have any questions! I’ll post another update when I do a spring refresh.
