I liken lichens — as in really really like them and look for them wherever I go!

It all started when I was helping with the Travis County Flora project (in Austin, Texas) and there was a coffee table book of lichens at project leader’s home. I started flipping through it and it blew my mind! Here’s a great article on lichens from the US Forest Service if you’d like to learn about these amazing organisms.

Here are some recent lichen illustrations that I did while we were camping in Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico. There were so many cool lichens there — wish I had time to paint them all!

Lichens on a rock, found while hiking.
Here are the tools of my lichen trade: tiny brushes, paints, a metal palette, and plenty of patience.
