We went hiking right from our camp at Yellowstone National Park and about a mile and a half in we discovered a herd of bison blocking the trail! I wanted to record the moment in my sketchbook, but didn’t want to get out my full kit in case we had to make a fast retreat.
So I just used a pen and a monocular to do some blind contour sketches. Some of the sketches are too funny! But some aren’t half bad. And now I’ll always have the memories of those magical moments.
Several of you asked about the pen and monocular I was using, so here you go:
- Brunton Lite Tech Monocular, 8×22 — I keep this in my daypack — it’s not half bad for the price and we’ve got to see so many cool things with it that we wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. I’ve had it for about a year now.
- Stillman & Birn Beta Sketchbook, 3.5 x 5.5 — another thing I always keep in my daypack — it takes watercolor and ink really well
- Kaweco Sport Piston Filler Pen, broad nib — I got this pen a few months ago and I’ve been really loving it so far! It’s filled with De Atramentis Blue Grey Document ink
It was just so cool seeing them all — I was in awe of these majestic creatures.
